I want to take you back to early 2009. I was living in Barrie, Ontario, working at a hardware store. I was taking a gap year after high school to determine the answer to the big question - “What do you want to do?”
Before 2009, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I didn’t have a plan or know the “exact thing” I wanted to pursue and do for a career.
But come early 2009, after some research, soul searching, and digging. A plan began to take shape.
I knew I wanted 3 things: to do something different, adventurous, and cool.
I didn’t want to follow the path of everyone else. I never have.
And so it began. I packed a bag and flew to BC to learn how to fly helicopters.
I’ve been chasing my dreams since 2009.
They’ve changed shape, and I’ve travelled down many roads. This post is to help you stick to or follow your own dream - whatever that may be.
By following these steps, you'll be equipped with the courage and clarity to pursue your passions wholeheartedly.
The first and most important step in following your dreams is to define what they truly are. It's essential to dig deep into your heart and soul to uncover your genuine desires and aspirations.
Ask yourself the following questions to gain clarity:
Reflect on the activities or pursuits that bring you joy and a sense of fulfillment.
Often, your true passions are hidden within these experiences.
Envision where you see yourself in the next five, ten, or twenty years.
Embrace your wildest dreams without limitations or doubts.
Your dreams should align with your values and principles, making them an authentic representation of who you are.
Achieving your dreams may require dedication and perseverance.
Determine the level of commitment you're willing to invest.
Once you've explored these questions, you'll be better equipped to define your dream with clarity and purpose.
Having a dream is a fantastic starting point, but without a plan, it remains a distant fantasy.
To bring your aspirations to fruition, you need a well-defined plan of action.
Here's how you can create one:
Break down your dream into smaller, achievable goals. Each goal should be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART).
This approach will make your journey more manageable and less overwhelming.
Knowledge is power. Take the time to research and learn about the industry or field related to your dream.
Seek mentors, attend workshops, or pursue education that can provide you with the necessary skills and insights.
Expect challenges along the way. Instead of allowing obstacles to deter you, view them as opportunities for growth.
Develop resilience and a positive mindset to overcome hurdles.
Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who support and encourage your dreams.
Join communities, networking events, or online groups related to your interest.
Dreaming without action will lead to stagnation. Take the first step, no matter how small it may seem.
Consistent effort and determination will propel you forward.
Following your dreams is a rewarding and transformative journey. By defining your dream and creating a solid action plan, you'll be well on your way to turning your aspirations into reality.
While my initial dream changed, I never stopped dreaming. I never stopped believing in myself and what I truly wanted to do, and the impact I wanted to leave.
I flew helicopters for many years following my dream. It wasn’t easy, but I persisted.
Remember that this journey may not always be smooth, but with dedication, perseverance, and a burning passion, you can overcome any obstacles that come your way.
Embrace the challenges, celebrate your progress, and enjoy the fulfillment that comes from pursuing your dreams.
So, go ahead, take that leap of faith, and unlock the immense potential that lies within you!
