The critical question I want to answer in today’s blog is when do you know it’s the right time to transition to a different job or career? Many people go for months, if not years wanting to do something else, but few make a change.
Changing jobs or careers takes courage and usually involves some risk. Depending on what situation you are currently in can prohibit you from taking action and doing something different.
Let’s look at a few different categories of people you may fall into:
Now while many different circumstances and situations may pull you away from your current career, I want to focus on three that are the most common.
If you hate your job, aren’t fulfilled with what you’re currently doing, or have always wanted to do something else, you are ready to transition to a different job or career.
I once fell under all of these categories at one point. While I didn’t necessarily hate my job, it wasn’t something I felt a strong passion for. I was no longer fulfilled with what I was doing, and deep down knew I wanted to do something else.
This is what I call the little voice inside your head. Have you ever heard it before?
The voice urges you to do something else, to make a change and move on. Or it could be the same voice telling you to stay put because it’s too risky to try, and you could fail and end up broke.
Changing careers is scary and yields a lot of unknowns. That’s where the excitement is and what makes it uncomfortable.
Sixty percent of the workforce are dissatisfied with the work they’re currently doing! Over half of the people you know don’t like going to work each day. This is a significant figure, and I hope to bring this number down as much as possible.
If you’re struggling with the HOW to make this transition, I invite you to sign up for my FREE Career Jump Masterclass.
If you’re someone who has wanted to make a change for some time now but don’t know how this 25-minute Masterclass will give you three tools to act on immediately.
Everyone’s transition will look slightly different, but the fundamentals of the change will be very similar.
The time is now. The longer you wait to follow your passion, the longer it will take you to get there. Many people claim that it’s not the right time to switch. I offer the opposite advice. Today is the best time in your life to make a change.
The sooner you jump to follow your dreams, the sooner you will succeed. Waiting will only prolong your regret.
If you’re someone who hates their job, is in a toxic environment, and is being pulled down by the business, you need to find a way to get out as soon as possible.
When considering sleep, your job adds up to about a third of your life. This is a massive portion of your life, and you shouldn’t hate the main thing you do.
So many people do work they hate because they feel like they’re in too deep and have no way out. This is completely false. No matter what your age is or how much experience you’ve accumulated, you can make a change at any time.
Not only can you make a change at any time, but you can jump into something completely different from what you’re doing now!
Most people think of different career fields as being completely different. Although, a lot of the skills, tools, and knowledge you’ve already gained can be transferable to a different job.
Whether you are an expert in sales, marketing, or fixing cars, you’ve built up many valuable skills in your field that can be used elsewhere.
I recommend to anyone who hate’s their job to make a plan to get out of there as soon as possible. Don’t waste any time, and create and execute your plan now. Life is too short to hate what you do, you deserve better.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, we’ve seen many changes in how people work. The vast majority of the workforce is no longer required to go into their workplace to perform their duties.
Many people I know have changed jobs, roles, and careers entirely. The workforce looked a lot different in the past (my parent's generation and prior). Back then, you got a job after school and pursued it for the rest of your life. Slowly moving up the ladder and providing for your family.
Whether you liked it or not, that’s what you did. Today it looks a lot different. People want to feel fulfilled in their work. They want to live with purpose and passion. People want to make an impact not only in their own life but in the lives of others.
And this drive to help and commit to others is why people want to be fulfilled in their work. They want to do something meaningful and aligned with their values.
Since early 2020, I have known many people who have returned to the drawing boards of their careers. They’ve formed a new outlook on their life and what they truly want.
Many of these people have made changes to the way they live their life and the work they do.
Are you someone that also wants to make a significant change like this? If so, be sure to enroll in my free Career Jump Masterclass!
Maybe you’ve lived with the little voice inside your head for years. It’s telling you to do something else. It’s pulling you in a different direction from your current path.
For years before making a significant change in my professional life, I knew I wanted to do something else. I knew deep down that something had to change in my career.
The problem with this is most people have that little voice inside their head; most people want to do something else, but few leap.
If you know you want to do something else in your job or career, you need to act immediately. Being comfortable is easy and familiar - a dangerous place to live your life.
Focus on trying to get out of your comfort zone. Focus on making small incremental changes to eventually change what you’re doing.
While I talk about the little voice inside your head, it’s important to note when to listen to it and when to block it out. That little voice can be the same one telling you to not jump. To wait where you are because the timing isn’t right, you don’t have enough money, or you’ll fail.
If the voice is negative self-doubt, block it out. Say to yourself, “I CAN DO IT.” When the little voice is pulling you towards passion and fulfillment, listen. Follow it and take action.
Changing jobs and careers can be the ride of a lifetime. Whether you succeed or fail isn’t the point. The point is to follow your heart, do what you love, and never give up. Many people want to make a career change but don’t know where to start.
Whether you hate your job, are unfulfilled, or just want to do something else. The time is now, and there has never been a better time in the world to do something different.
