If you’ve followed me for any time, you’ll know that I love everything productivity. Being efficient makes sense to me. I mean, why would anyone want to waste their most valuable asset? Time.

When I think or hear multitasking, my brain automatically diverts to thinking about productivity.

Thinking big and small about what multitasking is and why it matters. But, on the other side, is multitasking even a thing?

Is it possible to multitask?

In today’s post, I’ll answer just that.

The first question I want you to ask yourself is - are you someone who prides yourself on multitasking?

Are you someone who can do multiple things at once?

What is Productivity?

To be productive means to achieve or produce a significant result.

You have the opportunity and chance to be productive in everything you do.

Whether at work, at home, exercise routine, reading, writing, creating content, or relaxing (yes, you can be productive while relaxing).

Productivity can be a matter of doing more or focusing on a desired task.

One word that goes hand in hand with productivity is FOCUS.

I pride myself on being someone who is laser-focused.

I can easily tackle any task for hours on end with uninterrupted focus.

Another name for this skill is deep work.

If you haven’t read the book Deep Work by Cal Newport, I recommend you check it out.

The Myth of Multitasking - A.K.A. The Facts

First off, rather than believe me and what I have to say. Let’s look at some of the pros, scientists, and researchers that have done endless studies on multitasking.

Endless articles, posts, and scientific studies prove that multitasking is a myth.

Humans perceive that they can do 2 or more things at once.

In reality, this is called task switching.

When you go simultaneously from one task to another with speed.

While it is true that some individuals can task switch better, faster, and more efficiently than others. They are still task-switching, no doubt.

My experience with multitasking over the years is to focus on one thing at a time in depth. This is where real results come from 9 times out of 10. This is called monotasking, which I’ll get into in a bit.

The Problem You’re Dealing With - Focus

We live in a go, go, go world. Time is of the essence, and everyone has a million things on the go.

There simply isn’t enough time to do everything you want. This is where focus comes in - or a lack thereof.

Today capturing people’s attention is critical.

Critical for sales, advertisements, employees, students, managers, leaders, and so much more.

Attention is valuable, but it’s also the one thing that’s lacking.

From endless social media feeds from Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and Twitter. You are inundated with endless information, pictures, posts, and media.

This is no doubt hindering your focus in other areas of your life.

It’s also a technology-rich era we live in. Putting devices in kids, teens, and adults' hands. This technology is meant to hold our attention beyond everything else.

The longer users are on their screens, the more they will buy and be sucked into the newest trends, gadgets, and tech.

With focus and attention lacking more than ever, what can you do about it?

Here are 3 things:

1. Monotasking

Focus on one thing at a time.

2. Time-blocking

Block off time to get your task done - 30 min, 45min, or even 90min straight.

3. Meditation

One way to help you get ahold of your thoughts, emotions, and internal wandering.

Why People Want to Multitask

People love the thought of multitasking because they want to get more done.

Doing more daily can help you improve your life, business, relationships, and more.

Many people pride themselves on being busy.

Have you ever talked to someone, and they talked about how busy they’ve been for the last while?

They go on about work, nights, and weekends—no time to do anything but work and manage everything else.

It’s time to stop taking pride in working insane hours and thinking you’re multitasking and “getting more done.”

Look at the facts. Get with the times.

It’s about focus and attention.

Conclusion

As you can see, multitasking is not only a myth but wastes more of your time.

If you truly want to be productive and get more done, implement these 3 things:

1. Monotasking

2. Time-blocking

3. Meditation

Get the book Deep Work by Cal Newport. Learn what you can on focus and attention and how the world's top producers get big things done.

Being productive is about focusing and controlling it.

While this can take time to develop (like anything else), it will be well worth it.

It’s time to stop trying to multitask and start focusing on one thing at a time - intensely.

This has been a recipe I’ve used for years with huge amounts of success.

From competing in fitness shows, doing more work in fewer hours, controlling my time better, and beyond.
