10 Questions That Can Change the Way You Network Forever

I’ve met and connected with thousands and thousands of humans—people across industries, countries, backgrounds, jobs, and walks of life.

It’s been something that has genuinely changed my perspective, way of life, and opportunities.

But networking can feel overwhelming—crowded rooms, a sea of unfamiliar faces, and the pressure to make a lasting impression, especially as an introvert.

But what if I told you the key to effective networking isn’t what you say about yourself? 

It’s the questions you ask.

As an entrepreneur and career professional, networking is more than just collecting business cards or adding contacts on LinkedIn (follow me!).

It’s about building meaningful connections. 

And the fastest way to connect with someone is by showing genuine curiosity. 

Asking the right questions can transform a casual encounter into a valuable relationship.

Here’s how to do it effectively:

1. Ask Open-Ended Questions

Avoid questions that lead to yes or no answers. Instead, ask questions that encourage storytelling or reflection. 

For example:

“What inspired you to start your business?”

“What’s been the most rewarding part of your career so far?”

These questions allow people to share their passions and experiences, creating a deeper conversation.

2. Focus on Them, Not You

It’s tempting to jump into a pitch about your business, but the best networkers know it’s not about talking; it’s about listening. 

So once you ask a question (that’s concise), stop talking!

Show genuine interest in the other person by asking about their goals, challenges, and insights. 

For example:

“What projects are you excited about right now?”

“What’s a challenge you’re currently working through?”

This approach helps you learn more and leaves the other person feeling heard and valued—a win-win.

3. Be Curious and Specific

Generic questions can lead to surface-level conversations. 

Instead, tailor your questions to the person or event. If you know someone is in tech, you might ask:

“What trends in tech are you most excited about?”


If you’re at a business conference, try:

“What’s been your biggest takeaway from the event so far?”

Specific questions show that you’re paying attention and genuinely interested in their perspective.

4. Don’t Be Afraid to Follow Up

The best conversations often come from digging a little deeper. 

If someone mentions a recent success or challenge, ask:

“What do you think made that project so successful?”

“How did you overcome that hurdle?”

Follow-up questions demonstrate active listening and encourage a more meaningful exchange.

5. End with a Connection Question

Before parting ways, ask a question that opens the door for future interactions:

“How can I support you or your business?”

“Is there anyone in my network you’d like to meet?”

These questions show your willingness to give, not just take, which is the hallmark of a great networker.

Connect with people on social media, like LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, and whatever else they use.
