You’re not lazy—you’re likely just drained or low on coffee…
As professionals and entrepreneurs, we often think of energy as something we either have or don’t.
But the truth is, energy isn’t a fixed resource. It’s something we can build.
And the more we understand what’s fueling—or draining—us, the more in control we become of our productivity, focus, and motivation.
One of the most practical ways to examine this is through what I call the 3-Layer Energy Stack: Mind, Body, and Environment.
When even one of these is out of balance, it becomes much harder to focus, stay motivated, or follow through.
Let’s break it down.
Mental energy is about clarity and cognitive space.
If your mind feels foggy, scattered, or overstimulated, it will be hard to produce meaningful work, even if you’ve technically “got the time” to do it.
Every decision, worry, unfinished task, or internal conversation takes up bandwidth. Too much of that, and your brain starts slowing down.
Simple ways to reset your mental energy:
Today’s action: Set a 5-minute timer and jot down everything that's swirling in your head. Let the paper or screen hold it for you instead.
You can’t think clearly or work efficiently if your body is running on empty.
Lack of movement, dehydration, poor sleep, and inconsistent meals all chip away at your ability to stay energized and focused.
I like to have a 750 millilitre water bottle near me all day. I’ll sip it often and stay hydrated. I also prioritize eating 3 good meals a day - even though some days are harder than others…
Many of us push through physical fatigue, thinking we just need more willpower. But your body needs real fuel to support the work your brain is trying to do.
Simple ways to support your body energy:
Today’s action: Schedule one five-minute movement break into your afternoon. Step outside, stretch, or walk around the block. I’ve recently been loving a nice 30-minute walk outside in the afternoon. I try and stay off my phone, listen to some soothing music and walk 2-3 kilometres.
What surrounds you impacts how you feel—and how well you function.
When your environment is cluttered, chaotic, or uninspiring, it quietly drains your energy and makes it harder to focus. I can’t stress this one enough. I need a clean, simple, and clutter-free environment - especially in my office and working area.
On the flip side, even small adjustments to your workspace or routine can make you feel more energized, motivated, and in control of your day.
Simple ways to improve your environmental energy:
Today’s action: Pick one space in your work area—your desk, your chair, or your background—and declutter it. Notice how your brain responds to the shift.
When you understand the three layers of energy—mind, body, and environment—you gain the power to troubleshoot and reset in real time.
So the next time you feel stuck, unmotivated, or tired despite “doing everything right,” don’t just push harder.
Ask yourself: Which layer needs my attention right now?
Small adjustments in any one of these areas can create a ripple effect that restores your focus and helps you move through your day with more ease, clarity, and momentum.
